FIve Uncommon Holiday Gifts for Teens

Teenagers can be a nightmare to shop for, especially if you have a troubled teen on your list this year. They may be reclusive, uninviting and seemingly unfriendly, but it’s still important to show them that you really care and know them this holiday season.

It’s easy to write a check or buy the latest gadget, but it’s the uncommon gifts this year that are going to connect you with your troubled teen. If you are looking for some great ideas, see below.

Event tickets. If your teen is a sports fan or a music lover, one of the best gifts they can receive is to experience these events in person. Do your research first, and find their favorite team or artist, or if you can not find them visiting your area anytime soon, search for something in the same genre you know they will enjoy. Even better is the gift of your time going with them, as it shows you are taking an active interest in what they love.

Investments in their name. Although not very exciting, starting a college fund or investment account in your teenager’s name shows them you are ready to trust them with financial responsibility. Talk to them about what the funding means, and how to take care of the money for good use later. Leave the decisions up to them with your guidance, and you may be surprised at how well they can handle it themselves.

Classes. If you have a budding artist or musician in your family, treat them to some professional classes where they can learn to perfect their craft. Teen and adult education courses outside of regular school are relatively easy to find in most cities, and you can do anything from art to cooking or learning to play an instrument. Not only is this a thoughtful gift, but can also occupy your teen’s time outside of school with a positive influence, which may help keep them out of more trouble.

Memberships. These days, most city activities can be purchased in a set or as annual memberships. This is a great way to give a gift that keeps on giving all year long to your teen. Memberships can be purchased at anything from gyms to city zoos or outdoor parks and music arenas. Your teen can enjoy their favorite activities year round, and don’t be surprised if they ask for the same gift again the next year!

The gift of help. Although this may seem like more of a punishment at the time, if you have a truly out of control teen, the best gift you may consider giving them is professional help. There are many available options for troubled teens, such as teen military camps, residential programs, wilderness camps, outpatient programs or online programs if you feel you need something closer to home. These programs are designed to aid your teen in their difficult time with whatever tools that are needed.
